Copy the NFPA rating definitions from 0 to 4 for each of the four specific areas in the diamond symbol (i.e. health ( blue ), flammability ( red ), reactivity ( yellow ) and special information (white )) to a new page after the table of contents in your lab notebook. Label the page as “ NFPA Diamond Symbol Rating Definitions ”. You can copy the definitions either from the following Web site OR from the definitions provided on page II.4 in the lab manual (5 th edition). (III) MSDS /NFPA Exercise Complete this section in the lab notebook – Start a NEW page for this section This exercise serves as a guide for the rest of the quarter regarding the safety information that you may need to look up for pre - lab assignments. MSDS contains information on a specific compound including physical properties, NFPA information , reactivity and disposal information etc. Record the following MSDS /NFPA information in your laboratory notebo ok for the following chemical. Formic Acid (CAS: 64 - 18 - 6 ) Printouts directly from Web pages will NOT be accepted for grading for the exercise You should choose a site that provides you with chemical information that matches closely to the concentration/reagent grade listed for the chemical. For example, you can do a MSDS search on Google by typing the name of the chemical and concentration (if applicable) ( e.g. HCl 2 M MSDS ) . Use either “Fisher Scientific” or “Lab Chem” to look up MSDS/NFPA information. For this exercise , you need to LIST the following required items for the chemical compound. Reference the site (i.e. write down the name and the URL address) that you used for looking up the chemical information during the exercise . You only need to use ONE single Web site for this exercise. It is not necessary to use multiple different sites for this exercise. 1. Chemical name 2. Physical state at room temperature (i.e. solid, liquid or gas) 3. Specific g ravity (density) for a s olvent or a l iquid 4. Waste disposal procedure 5. NFPA NUMERICAL RATING (i.e. 0 to 4) for the blue, red and yellow regions on the NFPA symbol for the compound. There is no need to copy the numerical rating definitions for the compound. You should have already copied all the NFPA rating definitions in section (II). Note: You should have two separate references for this exercise. The first reference should be the URL for looking up MSDS/NFPA information for the compound. The second reference should be the page number for the NFPA definitions copied from section (II). For example “NFPA definitions on page s 2 – 3 in the notebook” as your second reference. You should make sure your writing transferred properly to the carbon copy page when working on the exercise!
